(Snes) Populous 2: Trials of the Olympian gods (511KB)

[animated]

Populous II is a direct sequel to Bullfrog's earlier game Populous and is one of the company's most famous games. Like its predecessor, Populous II is a god game, where the player takes the role of a god, helping his people fight battles against followers of an enemy god.

Whereas Populous only generally alluded to gods, Populous II is specifically set in Greek mythology. The player takes the role of a demigod, one of Zeus's countless children with mortal women, and has to battle one Greek deity at a time until finally facing his father. Zeus has promised to let the player into the Pantheon if he can survive all the battles.

Populous II has considerably more "divine intervention" effects than Populous. Whereas Populous had eight effects, Populous II has twenty-nine. These are divided into six categories: earth, water, wind, fire, plants and humans. Each category has an individual "strength meter" that determines which effects are available to use. Similarly to the "knight" effect in Populous, each effect category includes a "hero" effect, allowing the player to turn one of his followers into any of six legendary figures in Greek mythology.

The effect categories also come into play when the player wins a battle against an enemy god. Depending on his performance, he is awarded one to five experience points, which he can then use to boost his capabilities in any of the six categories.
