"Very intelligently made game"
Although this game has never made it to America, I still found a way to play it, and let me tell you something: I have no regrets for the time spent searching for this game in english. Being a hardcore RPG fan (I played most of the good ones out there) I believe that this one should have been able to fly to America, but I guess this is one of the disadvantages in working with nintendo in those years, when for some reasons, RPGs ceased to come.
Battle System:8/10
Ok, the battles at the beggining of the game did amaze me, with the incredible music and the superly nicely drawn monsters, but I have to admit that after a while, normal enemy battles become pretty dull, making you want to rush through dungeons avoiding any contact with the monsters. To enter a fight, this is sort of like Lufia 2, where you see the enemies, and you have to walk into them to enter the battle screen. The battles resemble those from Final Fantasy, but with a weird way of learning skills. Now, when it comes to boss battles, this game really rocks! Sometimes you will be drawn into battles with lots of variaty, for example, that one where you are on a car, fighting a dragon car. Other times, you will enter a strategy based fight, giving boss battles lots of variety.
Music/Sound: 10/10
This is one of this game's strongest points. I don't remember any tune in here annoying me, making me want to shut it off. The battle themes, the special themes, Robin's theme, the boss themes... all of them were stunning!
The sound is neatly varied and matched the movements made by characters.
Originality: 9/10
I played this game after playing Chrono Cross, and I have to admit, I felt some kind of resemblance. I think it is the fact that experoence points in this game are non-existant, just like in Chrono Cross, which was made years after RS3, and the countless amount of playable characters. Also, in this game, you get to go anywhere you want, giving you the chance to complete any quest at any time.
Plot: 6/10
Now with such gameplay, where you get to do as you please throughout the whole game, the plot is sure to be near absent, especially with so many characters. (Chrono Cross corrected this by adding superb plot) But still, I was surprised to find several twists near the end of the game. I enjoyed it pretty much. The only thing though, is that if you're looking for intense character development and a Robert Jordan type of story, look elsewhere.
Visuals: 7/10
Ok, honnestly, the graphics do seem nice, but compared to Tales Of Phantasia, they deserve less than 7. I have to admit though that the monsters are superbly well drawn and the town look nice. Great Ark gave you the feeling of a tropical island, and Lance gave you more of an arctic feeling. But monster animations could have been added though. But hey, we're never satisfied with what we get anyway.
difficulty: Hard
If you don't like leveling up, this game is not for you!!! Some monsters are very hard, and honnestly, I recommend playing this game with a walkthrough to help you out, or you'll spend many extra hours leveling up.
This game was nicely made and deserves credit. It is very fun, and holds many surprises for you, so i suggest you get it, any way you want! Find it and enjoy just like I did.
