Sony's next game console will employ a read-only version of the new Blu-ray optical disc format, giving it as much as 27 gigabytes of storage on one disc, Kyodo News reports today.
Representatives of the electronics giant reportedly made the announcement as part of a presentation by the 13-member consortium behind the new format. The main purpose of the event was to announce plans to finalize the specifications of read-only Blu-ray discs by September 30.
Blu-ray is an optical disc that employs a blue laser with a much shorter wavelength than the red lasers used by CD and DVD players. Because of that shorter wavelength, a single Blu-ray disc can contain much more data in a disc the same size as current formats. Single-layer discs can fit 23.3 gigabytes, 25 gigabytes, or 27 gigabytes, while dual-layer discs can fit as much as 54 gigabytes.
Sony originally developed the Blu-ray technology as a recordable format for a new generation of digital video recorders, designed to record high-definition television broadcasts. Subsequently, it's found backing from major electronics and media companies like Samsung, Matsushita, Mitsubishi, and several more.
Members of the consortium plan to launch Blu-ray video playback units (as opposed to video recorder units, which are already available in limited release) by the end of the current fiscal year next March. Coincidentally, the first public presentation of Sony's next game console will also take place around that same time.

Yes, you all were. I was just sharing thoughts. Don't get me wrong I do feel that with these new disks, longer gameplay (longer than before, at least) is in future of the games. The only thing to do is to keep up with the changes to be able to experience it.
I look foward to this. It looks like these discs are going to hold a lot. I agree with Perfect Warrior, it will be interesting to see how many games take advantage of this.
i fell companies are more likely to focus only on the graphics even with the massive storage that the blu-ray will offer i think games will not get any longer ( maybe even shorter ) do to game companies haveing given up on makeing a good story line and good charters for there games and now focus only on how good it looks not how well it play or how fun the games are.
and i truely doubt me buy or even renting any new system that come out!

True..... like me I prefer FF3 over The Bouncer....(too short...)
I am iffy on this, yes most likely my Dad with get me a PS3...but if there isn't a game that is up to par with my current selection (I still haven't seen ANYTHING as funky as Space Channel 5 OR Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio Future). I prefer the games that have style, story, and good music/gameplay...heck I love the GBA version of Jet Grind Radio, suchy ass graphics, but a great game and story.
