Well,

I would recommend The Polyphonic Spree and The Mountain Goats. There's two to get you started. Ha ha! Welcome to the boards, by the way.

Peace,

manaman

EDIT: Oh my goodness! I totally thought you were asking for American indie bands! I don't know how I got that. I read your post wrong. I thought you were just mentioning the British bands as a reason for wanting to try out some American ones. Blast it all! Ha ha!

Alright, here's some stuff I'm listening to right now:

Animal Collective
Arcade Fire
Belle & Sebastian
Bloc Party
Born Ruffians
Caribou
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
DeVotchKa
Evangelicals
Hot Chip (Kinda Dance/Electronic, but still pretty good)
Jens Lekman
Menomena
Midlake
Neutral Milk Hotel
Nick Drake
Of Montreal
Ra Ra Riot
Sufjan Stevens
Sunset Rubdown
The Fiery Furnaces
Throw Me The Statue
Vampire Weekend

I'm not sure where all of them are from, or if they're all really classified as "indie", but I put them all in the same general group.
