Screw them all and get yourself a Linux distro.
For new linux users I recommend Ubuntu. You can install Ubuntu as your primary operating system and use a vanilla Windows install for games (dual boot). This will allow you to keep your gaming operating system (Windows XP) fast and slim and have a far more functional and far more customizable operating system (Linux). Example: http://dev.ep-dev.com/Screenshot.jpg (this is not running Ubuntu, but it is running the same software that Ubuntu offers). Of course, there is a lot of customization in Linux (choosing desktops, window managers, icons, etc).
