Final Fantasy VII problem

I am new to emulators - I had to have my tech savvy cousin help me set it up, but now I can run FF7. The problem is the very first battle - where Cloud's HP/MP should be, it is instead black. There is just a small amount of blue in the middle. I have tried different video plug-ins. I have also tried the configuration options (the [...] button) under the video menu. I have ePSXe 1.7.0. Maybe it's something worse, like my video card? I don't know - I have had this laptop for a week - it came with Windows Vista, but that doesn't seem to be a problem. Any help?

Also, my laptop is an acer Extensa 4420, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Use Pete DX6 D3D Driver1.75(the name should be something like that) from video configuration and try to change the it to high graphic setting. Also check the box "mask bit"....
